Why go there?

Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park was created to protect several historically significant locations in the Shenandoah Valley of Northern Virginia, most notably the site of the Civil War Battle of Cedar Creek and the Belle Grove Plantation. The park also includes a number of other features of historical importance, such as the Belmont estate, which was used as a headquarters by both Generals Philip Sheridan and George Custer during the war. In total, there are over 3,700 acres within the park's authorized boundary. However, over half of this land is still privately owned. Much of the battle ground at Cedar Creek has been preserved as part of the park. The same is true for Belle Grove Plantation, which has been restored to its appearance during the Civil War era. Visitors to the park can explore a number of trails and driving tours that wind through these and other historically significant sites.
