Why go there?

The Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial honors the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe during World War II and the 34th President of the US. The memorial is located to the south of the National Mall, in a park-like plaza framed by large columns and featuring a mesh tapestry depicting the Normandy landings. The memorial was designed by famed architect Frank Gehry and completed in 2020. It has been criticized for its cost (over $150 million), its use of public funds, and its location (on federal land that was originally intended for use as a museum). Nevertheless, it stands as a testament to Eisenhower's legacy as one of the most consequential figures in American history. For better or worse, the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial is here to stay.
