The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial is dedicated to the memory of the 32nd President of the United States, and to the era he represents. It is the second of two that have been constructed in Washington to commemorate that president. The first, located on the National Mall, was dedicated in 1965, just a year after FDR's death. The second memorial, which opened in 1997, is located on the waterfront of the Tidal Basin, near where Roosevelt's beloved pet dog Fala often played. The memorial consists of a series of sculptures and water features spread over 7.5 acres. It includes four "rooms", each representing a different phase of Roosevelt's Presidency: The New Deal Room, The War Room, The Four Freedoms Room, and The Life Room. Each room contains sculptures and carvings that depict scenes from FDR's life and Presidency. In addition, there are quotes from Roosevelt inscribed on walls throughout the memorial. Visitors can learn about FDR's policies and accomplishments, as well as get a sense of the man himself through these various elements.
