Why go there?

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area encompasses the area around Lake Powell and lower Cataract Canyon in Utah and Arizona. The area is a vast 1.2 million acres of mostly rugged high desert terrain named for Glen Canyon, and about 2,000 miles of shoreline. It borders Capitol Reef National Park and Canyonlands National Park on the north; Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument on the west; Vermilion Cliffs National Monument and the northeasternmost reaches of Grand Canyon National Park on the southwest; and the Navajo Nation on the southeast. There are 5 public marinas, 4 public campgrounds and two small airports that service the GCNRA. Sport outfitters provide houseboats, powerboats, jet skis, kayaks and other related equipment for visitors. Bass fishing is a popular activity, and below the Glen Canyon Dam smallmouth bass are considered a damaging invasive species. Multiple boat ramps have been closed due to drought conditions, so it's best to check ahead if you are preparing to launch a boat.
