The Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail is a network of trails that runs along the Potomac River from Washington, DC, to Virginia, Maryland and links to trails in Pennsylvania. The trail network includes 710 miles of existing and planned trails, and offers hikers, bikers, and horseback riders a chance to explore some of the most scenic and historic parts of the river. The trail passes through a variety of landscapes, including forests, meadows, and wetlands. Along the way, visitors can see a variety of wildlife, including bald eagles, herons, and beavers. The trail also passes by some of the most important historical sites in the region, including George Washington's Mount Vernon estate and the site of the Battle of Gettysburg.
