Why go there?

The Suitland Parkway is a historic road that runs for 9 miles between Washington, D.C. and Prince George's County, Maryland. Although most people think of parkways as being natural and scenic with many trees, Suitland Parkway is a little different. This parkway has more of an urban feel to it, but is historically significant. The parkway was conceived in 1937 and built during World War II to provide a road connection between military facilities in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. It fully opened on December 9, 1944, as the Camp Springs highway, so named because it connected Camp Springs (now Joint Base Andrews) in Prince George's County with Bolling Air Force Base. In recent years, a 2-mile-long trail, called the Suitland Parkway Trail, has been constructed from Pomeroy Road to Southern Avenue. The trail provides a scenic route for pedestrians, bicyclists, and other non-motorized vehicles.
