The Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site commemorates the rise of Tuskegee University from a one-room schoolhouse to a renowned center of learning. Tuskegee University was founded in 1881 by Booker T. Washington, who recruited the best and the brightest teachers to come and work at the school, including George Washington Carver. Carver's innovations in agriculture, especially with peanuts, helped transform the site from a struggling school to a world-renowned institution. Today, visitors can tour the historic campus, learn about the contributions of Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver, and see firsthand the impact that Tuskegee University has had on the world.
