Valles Caldera
- New Mexico

Valles Caldera was created about 1.25 million years ago when a spectacular volcanic eruption created the 13-mile wide circular depression. Located in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico, it features hot springs, streams, fumaroles, natural gas seeps and volcanic domes. The highest point in the caldera is Redondo Peak, an 11,253-foot resurgent lava dome located entirely within the caldera. Scientists believe that magma still exists beneath Valles Caldera, however it is currently at a depth that makes an eruption unlikely in the foreseeable future. Within the caldera itself are several grass valleys, the largest one is accessible by only one paved road.
