Dunes are prettier in pink! The striking sand in this beautiful Utah state park was created by the erosion of pink-colored Navajo Sandstone. Located southeast of Zion, it's a great place for four-wheeling and camping. Sandboarding is also a popular activity, sandboards and sand sleds can be rented directly at the park.

Enjoy a stroll through Crest Canyon open space park to the San Dieguito Lagoon, one of California's protected coastal wetlands.

A 55-mile stretch of pristine natural beauty just north of San Diego, San Diegiuto River Park is an amazing destination for birdwatching, hiking and biking. It follows the San Dieguito River corridor between Del Mar and Julian , ending at Volcano Mountain. There are more than 80 miles of trails, including the Coast to Crest Trail. There's also great fishing in the San Dieguito Lagoon.

El Malpais is the perfect place to take your scenic drive from New Mexico to Arizona. Discover the sandstone bluffs, natural arch, and lava flows.

El Malpais, meaning "the badlands," is a truly unique and amazing place. This richly diverse volcanic landscape offers visitors the chance to explore incredible geologic features such as lava flows, cinder cones, lava tube caves, and sandstone bluffs. While some may see a desolate environment, people have been adapting to and living in this extraordinary terrain for generations. El Malpais is an excellent place for solitude, recreation, and adventure. There are endless opportunities to hike, camp, explore and just enjoy the incredible scenery.

30 miles north of New York City is Harriman State Park. "The Powerlinez" is a local climbing spot great for beginner to expert climbers. 

One of the jewels of the New York park system, Harriman State Park is an amazing destination for hikers, with over 200 miles of trails - including nearly 19 miles of the Appalachian Trail. And it's all thanks to a proposed prison. In 1909, a year after the death of her railroad magnate husband, Mary Averell Harriman offered to give the state 10,000 acres and $1 million to create a park. Only condition: they'd have to scrap plans to build a prison at Bear Mountain. Today, Harriman State Park boasts over 47,000 acres and is a great escape for fishing, camping and boating.

Tannehill Ironworks is a historic Civil War site in Alabama that produced iron for the Confederate Army. 

A time capsule back to the Civil War era, Tannehill Ironworks in Central Alabama is the site that produced much of the iron for the Confederate Army's ordnance. Along with the remains of old furnaces, you can visit the Iron & Steel Museum of Alabama, a grist mill and a cotton gin house. The furnaces were attacked and burned by Union forces on March 31, 1865. The park also has over 17 miles of trails for hiking and biking.

Ancil turned his passion for mushrooms into profit when he started growing and foraging gourmet mushrooms in South Georgia. 

The Big Hammock Wildlife Management Area spans over 7,000 acres and boasts a rich tapestry of ecosystems, from pine flatwoods and wetlands to hardwood forests. It offers hunting options for deer, turkey, and small game across this varied landscape. The WMA comprises around 100 acres of wildlife openings, 1,121 acres of upland hardwood hammock, and a vast 6,000 acres of bottomland hardwood and cypress forest. Visitors can enjoy activities like birdwatching, hiking, and hunting, while also appreciating the area's unique flora and fauna.

Mushroom Foraging with Swampy Appleseed

We discover snakeskins, mushrooms, and more in our day at the swampy Tickfaw State Park in Louisiana. 

An easy drive from New Orleans or Baton Rouge, Tickfaw State Park is a fantastic place to camp, fish or hike along boardwalks that will take you through four different ecosystems. It's a fantastic place to encounter wildlife, from American alligators and armadillos to white-tailed deer and beavers. The park has 14 cabins and 50 campsites, if you want to get on the water there are canoes for rent.

A Swampy Day in Louisiana

Discover gorgeous desert views, a boulder park with painted rocks and folk art at a neat roadside attraction in Jacumba, California.

Boulder Park is an unincorporated community in Imperial County, California, with a roadside attraction called Desert View Tower. The stone lookout, built in the 1920s, is 70’ high and offers views of miles of moon-like desert terrain. Boulder Park is fun for kids and adults alike, where found object art sculptures and rocks painted like animals and mythical creatures await as you walk through cave-like corridors. This folk art site is well worth the visit and is registered on the National Register of Historic Places.

One of the easiest day hikes on the Appalachian trail with incredible views. You begin the hike at Woody Gap in the Chattahoochee National Forest. 

This epic, nearly 2,200-mile trail spans no less than 14 states, passing through an extraordinary range of territory. Begun in 1921 and completed in 1937, it was built by private citizens and is now managed by the National Park Service, US Forest Service and Appalachian Trail Conservancy, as well as state agencies. A once-in-a-lifetime journey for intrepid hikers.
